Day 61 Monday June 9

crossing the bridge over the Golfo el Nicoya

Left Samara, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica
Temp: 30 degrees C
Slightly overcast

We were on the road before nine this morning hoping to get into and out of San José before the supper traffic.

-the early morning ride was like driving through a tunnel of trees-

We made it to the embassy by about one thirty and picked up the bike registration. Quite a security system to go through for access…! Thank you Ms. Eugenia Vargas for your help!

While there Eugenia asked about our immediate travel plans and informed us that we might want to reconsider heading down to Panama on the panamerican highway as there had been serious landslides and the road had been closed to traffic since last week’s storm. The problem area is the highest point of the Costa Rican mountains near a place called Cerro del Meurte (the mount of death). This section of highway is well named. It is narrow, steep, winding, and notorious for fog as thick as pea soup in the early afternoon.

The alternative is to go back about twenty kilometres north and take the coast road west to Playa Hermosa and then down the coast to dominical where we go back inland to San Isidro del General in the mountains and on down to Panama. This round-about is three times longer than the panamerican and can be flooded in sections with heavy rain so it’s hard to say if it’s worth the gamble.

We have decided to give it a try.

It rained really hard this afternoon and we have spent the last couple of hours laying out every document and piece of clothing we have to dry. The ink of the writing and stamps on some of the documents has run and are looking a bit sketchy. I hope we don’t run into any more crooked authorities looking for a bribe soon.

-storm clouds brewing...-

My passport, Yellow Fever Vaccine, and all inoculation records are a mess, even though they were in a special case with plastic on both sides, and in an inside pocket!

Our boots were buckets of water that we had to pour out once we got into the hotel!

I really don’t think we should refer to what happened as “rain”, it simply does not cover it!

I could not see six feet in front of me and the bike was leaving a wake behind us! And when the trucks and buses passed us we were hit with a tidal wave from the helmets down that threatened to push us off the road! I am truly amazed at the bike’s ability to soldier on in the worst of conditions without a hitch!

We pulled into the very first hotel we could recognize a sign for and called it an early day around five. We were not a pretty sight to behold but we sure were happy! Happy to have any place to get in out of that monsoon!

And miracle of miracles, they have wireless internet, a coffee machine with good quality coffee in the room and free breakfasts!....yahooo! butter side up!

No Travel Day

Samara, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica

Sunny and humid

Nice relaxed day doing nothing… reading, walking around town, found a great bakery….got things packed for the morning…

We really liked Samara! Of all the places we could have got stuck in while waiting for documents we couldn’t have done better. It’s with a bit of a heavy heart that we’ll be leaving in the morning.

Day 59 Saturday June 7

No Travel Day

Samara, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica
Temp: 36 degrees C
Cloudy, rain showers. Then sunny and humid

Rained all night…

Spent the day at the beach after a good breakfast. Susie rented a boogie board to play in the waves while I had another go at surfing. Sue caught on very quickly and soon became an 'expert' skimming across the top of the waves right up onto the beach! What Fun!!

We were enjoying happy hour and being content to just sit.

Sue came to the conclusion that life has slowed way down for her.

”I’m starting to act like I’m retired!” …like that was a bad thing!!!

A quiet, unspectacular sunset and an early evening….
