Day 82 Monday June 30

Left San Antonio, Texas

Temp: 20 degrees C

Cloudy, Heavy Rain & Heavy Crosswinds

We were on the road at 9:45 and heading towards El Paso. The going was good and the weather was cool and threatening. By about two thirty we were in heavy rain and strong winds.

The trip from San Antonio to El Paso is over 800KM long with about four stops along the highway for gas before Van Horn which is a little over 140 km from El Paso. There is a lot of nothing out there, hardly a building or shack in sight anywhere.

The problem with the bike is that it is only good for 200 kms before I’m on reserve. Unfortunately there was only one town, Van Horn, between us and El Paso once the storm hit and it was a couple hundred kilometres away. We just barely made it in to Van Horn on empty, Hungry, soaked to the bone, shivering and numb with cold.

We stopped at a little hotel called the desert Inn close to the highway at around five, passed out under the blankets immediately and didn’t wake until after eight.

The morning will hopefully bring clear skies and warmer weather.

Kilometres - Daytrip: 679 km total: 19,979

Gas: $ 47 Tolls: $0

Lodging: Desert Inn $ 43
