Day 95 Sunday July 13

Left Fort Stevens State Park, Oregon

Temp: 14 degrees C

Sunny, Cold

I was sick all night so we had a late start. By the time we hit the road after we had breakfast and had the camp gear packed it was 10:30.

We were hoping to make it to Canada today and decided on going the longer coastal route to Port Angeles for the ferry to Victoria BC.

It was a scenic and pleasant, if somewhat cold, ride and we were almost there when the motor started to sound “funny”. The oil light came on so I stopped to investigate. I had checked the oil level earlier that morning and it still was showing full. Lots of oil, so I figured we might be able to ease it in to the dealership thirty-some miles down the road at Port Angeles if I kept an eye on the heat gauge and limped in at 50 or 60 kmph.

Wrong!

About five miles later there was an expensive bang in the engine and I immediately coasted to a stop.

We were in the middle of the Crescent Lake State park area and down for the count!

As luck would have it there happened to be a couple, Chris and Chrissie, out swimming with their lab not a hundred yards from us. They heard the bang and offered to drive us to the Ranger information center five miles further on where there was a pay phone.

We arranged for a pickup and a ride into the dealer from AAA and reserved a room at a motel for the night. We had an hour and a half wait fighting mosquitoes and then we were off to Port

Angeles.

The dealership which is closed Sundays and Mondays is several miles the other side of town from the Motel but Clifford the driver was kind enough to take us in to the motel after dropping the bike off.

I think this stop is going to be a very expensive one which may require, if not a new motor, at least a very pricey major repair and overhaul. And there are no cheap accommodations in the vicinity. Even the most basic motel room is more than the average hotel rate we were paying at Econo Lodge or Day’s Inn or Holiday Inn and we might be here for a good long time!

The good news is at least it wasn’t raining!

And thank heavens for the kindness of strangers.
