We are in Costa Rica, Baby !

Day 52 Saturday May 31

Left San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua 9:45 AM

Temp: 33 degrees C

Sunny

I felt good enough to have breakfast and ride this morning and so we headed out for the border hoping that my high quality photocopies of the registration would be accepted as they were coming into Nicaragua.

WE only had about fifty Km to the border and the road out was now “passable”. We arrived there just before eleven. We got out of there after five.

Cost of “smuggling” my bike into Costa Rica: $300 US.

How I despise corrupt officials! We couldn’t go through, we couldn’t go back, “did I have enough money to pay the police?” what choice do I have? What can I do? Is there any other way?.....”NO! And do not tell anyone you pay the police!”

Yes, Matt (MacLean) there is a certain “charm” to Central America, but extortion isn’t it…….

A very long day later we are only about 60 KM from where we started today and a week’s worth of accommodation costs shorter.

Kilometers - Day trip: 0 km total: 12,434

Gas: $ 9

Lodging: Hotel Boyeros $74.75

DAY 51 Friday, May 30

No Travel day

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

Temp 32 Degrees C

Still stuck here because I’m too sick to leave today. Besides, the road is still not passable yet so we’ll hope for tomorrow.

The weather cleared nicely this morning, I heard, and it was quite warm in the sun by afternoon. I managed to get up and out for a stroll with my Susie by late afternoon and got a look at all the debris and damage caused by hurricane Alma. The beach is a mess!

I’m beginning to think we might be out of here by noon tomorrow, although there are much worst places we could have been caught in.

We’re going to chance getting caught between borders tomorrow and hope for the best.

Nice relaxing day for those not sick….
