Day 73 Saturday June 21

Left Tapachula, Mexico
Temp: 33 degrees C
Sunny

We were a little slow this morning and didn’t get on the road till about 8:30. My jeans were still wet from yesterdays deluge, the humidity was so high that not much was drying out.

The road out of tapachula was scary bad for the first hour and then thankfully improved considerably as we progressed; good thing as we ahd a long stretch to do if we were to find a decent hotel for the night.

The ride was punctuated with incredible vistas of deep valleys and high lush jungle peaks. We were almost always surrounded by huge irregular mountains that looked like a jaw-bone full of broken teeth.

There was a lot of new highway construction (Mexico is planning to improve 35,000 Km of highway and from what we’ve seen, they are well on their way!) but we still made good time and by about five pm we were checking into the Hotel Lena Real in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca Province, Mexico. This area is where the very first chocolate ever to get imported by the Spanish conquistadors to Europe came from!

Awesome pastry shops!!!

This little 'cutie' was out skipping up the sidewalk with her parents in tow.
With that sparkle in her eye, she reminded us of Patricks' Olivia.

Kilometres - Daytrip: 449km total: 16,780
Gas:
$ 21.24
Lodging: Hotel Lena Real $ 49.50
